Beagle Training: How To Train A Beagle You Can Live
With
Beagles are, by nature, very sweet, gentle dogs. They typically make wonderful family dogs and they are
excellent with children. However, they can still use some training. Beagles can have a mind of their own at times,
usually because of their sense of smell and their strong hunting instincts. Your Beagle may be very sweet, but if
he smells a rabbit he could take off in a flash, ignoring your calls. Beagle training can help with this kind of
problem so you can have a Beagle you can live with.
1. Beagle training: where to start?
You should start your Beagle training the same way that most training starts, especially if you have a Beagle
puppy. All puppies need good socialization. This means that you should take your Beagle puppy with you to places
where friendly puppies and dogs are welcome, such as a park or a pet supply store. Ask friendly strangers to pet
your puppy and give him a treat so your puppy learns that people are friendly. Allow your puppy to meet other
friendly puppies and dogs, on a leash.
You need to supervise every encounter so your puppy isn’t too exuberant. Make sure you ask an owner first before
allowing your puppy to meet their dog. Some dogs do not want a puppy to bother them and you don’t want your Beagle
puppy to have a bad experience. The purpose of this Beagle training is to teach your puppy that people are
friendly, other puppies and dogs can be friendly, and to enjoy going to new places and seeing new things. All of
these things helps to build a puppy or dog’s confidence so he won’t be a nervous or shy adult dog. Because Beagles
have been bred to live in packs for so long, they can be prone to separation anxiety if they are left alone. Good
socialization can help prevent problems with separation anxiety.
2. Take your Beagle puppy to puppy preschool.
Your Beagle training can also include taking your puppy to puppy preschool or puppy kindergarten classes. These
are classes offered by local kennel clubs, animal shelters, pet stores, or training centers. They enroll puppies so
they can socialize with each other. The owners have a chance to pet and play with the puppies. Some classes also
teach a few basic obedience commands and the puppies can learn some manners. Plus, if you have any questions about
your puppy’s behavior at home you can ask the training instructor about them. Classes such as these make training a
Beagle fun and easy and your Beagle puppy will probably have a wonderful time.
3. Teach your Beagle puppy some obedience commands.
Your Beagle puppy may be the sweetest, most loving puppy you’ve ever had, but he may have a mind of his own
sometimes. It’s a good idea to teach your puppy some obedience commands. As a hound breed, Beagles can be
independent at times. They are hunters and in the field they do have to think for themselves. But that doesn’t mean
they aren’t intelligent. They are! You simply have to find ways to motivate your Beagle. Fortunately, Beagles are
often very motivated by food. You can use this to your advantage.
Beagles respond well to praise and treats during training. You can decide whether you want to sign up for an
obedience course taught by a trainer using positive reinforcement methods (praise and rewards), or if you want to
teach your dog obedience commands at home. You can succeed with your Beagle either way. There are many good
training courses offered by local kennel clubs, animal shelters, pet stores, and training centers. Private trainers
also offer classes. A trainer may be willing to come to your house to work with you and your dog, though they may
charge slightly more for a home lesson. You can also work with your dog on your own. There are many good books,
CDs, and DVDs about obedience training to help you with training a Beagle.
You don’t have to be an expert in how to train Beagles to train your dog. If you follow the suggestions here and
devote time to working with your dog, training a Beagle isn’t really that hard. In fact, Beagle training can be fun
for you and your dog. Be patient and firm with your Beagle. Start with socialization and proceed to some basic
obedience commands. It won’t take long for your Beagle to be the well-trained dog you want him to be.
