Border Collie Information – Everything You Want to
Know
Border Collie information is crucial to become familiar with before you bring one of these energetic, adorable
dogs into your home because far too many of them end up in shelters.
Most people choose this breed because they hear that they are easy to train and good with kids and while both of
these reasons may be partially true, one cannot overlook that these dogs are bred to herd sheep. A child is nothing
more than a sheep lacking wool so if they nip or even bite to get them in line, it's natural for the dog however,
their actions often land them in a rescue.
Border Collie Information – Appearance
Border Collies are medium-sized, working dogs that come in gorgeous colors including white and black, red and
white, gray and black, tri-color, white and yellow, sable, all yellow and solid black. Some Border Collies have
longer hair, in this case, they should have a tail brush and a mane but the hair on their front legs, face and ears
should remain short. There are also two coat varieties to examine in Border Collie information being short and
sleek or rough and coarse.
The eyes are one of the standout features, often referred to as intelligent-looking in most Border Collie
information that you'll come across. They are amber to deep brown to blue and some will even be heterochromia (two
different colors). The ears on these dogs also vary in appearance. Some are fully erect, others are semi-erect and
there are even some that are fully dropped.
Border Collie Information – Exercise
Letting your Border Collie in the backyard to play everyday is not enough. While this may work with some breeds,
it won't with them. They do not only need to exercise, they need to work so they must have both physical and mental
stimulation to keep them happy.
Border Collie information will tell you that these dogs have an endless supply of energy. They are fast and
agile and need a long brisk walk or jog everyday. If you have sheep to herd, perfect! If not, playing fetch,
Frisbee or enrolling in agility training will give your dog work to do so they can be satisfy their instinct.
Border Collie Information – Dog Sports
Border Collies are known to really excel in a few different dog sports, especially sheepdog trials. They also
perform exceptionally well in dog agility competitions that require higher jump heights. In fact, they dominate
these competitions so often that there are even ABC classes in England, standing for Anything But Collies!
Border Collies have amazing stamina, speed and agility to dominate in disc and fly ball competitions and their
brilliance and observation skills land them near the top of the pack in dog dancing. They are also phenomenal
competitors in tracking trials due to their keen sense of smell. These trials are held in a controlled environment,
simulating the search and/or rescue of a lost or distressed individual. Because of their proven abilities in this
department, they are used as search and rescue dogs in urban, lowland and mountainous areas and even traine in both
ground and air-scenting.
Border Collie Information – Grooming
The Border Collie is an average shedding breed with relatively moderate upkeep needed in the grooming
department. They do need to be combed and brushed regularly to keep their coat shiny but they are pretty much an
odor-free breed. This means, bathe as needed with a mild shampoo but don't overdo it or you can dry out their skin.
Quite often, a dry shampoo is all you need between actual bathing sessions. Always check their coat and ears for
ticks, especially if yours does work out in the field.
