Do English Bulldogs shed? This seems to be one of the most common questions asked about the breed because from a glance you may assume that they don't. You shouldn't let that short coat fool you! You'll find your fair share of short, coarse hairs wherever your dog lays to rest, which is typically anywhere he chooses!

If shedding is a concern then this is not the breed for you. Their messy ways just add to their charm. They're sloppy eaters and drinkers and they slobber all over but you really just can't help but love them!

Although these dogs shed more than you would expect, the hair issues can be controlled with daily grooming. These sessions can be very enjoyable for you and your dog and they give you the opportunity to inspect his skin, especially between the folds to look for fleas and skin concerns that can cause health problems.

How Often Should You Groom?

You will need to set aside 5 to 10 minutes everyday for a good brushing. This will pull away loose hair and skin, stimulate circulation and spread natural oils to help prevent dryness.

As far as bathing is concerned, it really should only be done on a needed basis. Your dog may not need too many baths all winter but come summer, he will probably need them more often. You don't want to over bathe him but you do need to make sure that you keep the folds of his skin clean. Nails, Teeth, Ears and Eyes

Nails need to be clipped more often on this breed than others because they tend to not be as active so they don't wear their nails down too quickly. You should also get in the habit of brushing your dog's teeth everyday as well as cleaning their ears. Never put water in your dog's ears! All you have to do is use a clean, wet cloth and clean them out, go ahead and wipe in between his wrinkles on his head really good too!

This breed is susceptible to a lot of eye concerns so examining their eyes often and making sure they are clean is imperative. The main eye concerns you need to be familiar with are cataracts, cherry eye, entropian, ectropian, eyelash abnormalities, trichinosis, dry eye and persistent pupillary membrane.

If you're looking for a dog that requires little grooming, this is not the breed for you. English Bulldogs need proper care and attention to be healthy. They are at risk for a lot of skin and eye disorders but many can be avoided through proper hygiene and others are completely treatable when discovered and addressed early. Just because these dogs have short hair certainly does not make them low maintenance but their wonderful personalities and unparalleled devotion make every second that you invest well worth it.
