English Bulldog Information – One of the Most Historical Breeds

The English Bulldog is certainly one of those breeds that you look at and fall instantly in love with or else you feel your ankles may be in immediate danger. While they look tough and ornery with their short stout bodies and peculiar jawline, this is not a breed that is necessarily dangerous, despite the fact that they were created to attack. Bringing a new meaning to a face only a mother can love, the English Bulldog is referred to as both the ugliest and absolutely most adorable dog in the world.

English Bulldog Information – Their Colorful History

The English Bulldog is certainly not a newer breed, in fact, the name Bulldog, then called Bolddogge, was used in literature back in 1500. It wasn't until around 1631 that the modern day spelling was used. While you probably have learned through other English Bulldog information that these dogs have a high pain tolerance, you really can't appreciate just how high it is without exploring their history.

Bull was applied to the name because they were used for bull-baiting. The original Bulldogs were bred to be courageous, savage and insensitive to extreme pain. It wasn't until 1835 that England banned dog fighting and then these ferocious dogs really had no use anymore.

The breed's new temperature really came into play at this time. English Bulldog information suggests that many of the fierce qualities were bred out by New World dwellers. However, that wasn't the end of the abusive lifestyle for these dogs, in the 17th century, they were used for bear and bull-baiting. This popular sport requires the dog to attack a tied up bull and kill it which they typically did by latching onto the snout and suffocating it.

If you are interested in English Bulldog information regarding their history then you'll probably be surprised to know that the breed today is the result of being crossed with the mild-mannered, friendly Pug. The dog that was resulted was wider and shorter with a brachycephalic skull. Looking at the English Bulldog before and after this time period, you will notice very obvious differences.

English Bulldog Information – Their Unique Appearance

Despite the fact that English Bulldog information will tell you that the breed was derived from the Mastiff, these dogs are quite a bit shorter and smaller. They are wide and very stocky, standing between 12 and 16 inches tall and typically weighing less than 55 pounds.

Their heads appear misplaced and certainly too large for their bodies yet they fit together to create a dog that you can't help but smile when you look at one. The snout is short with large nostrils which you may notice if you're not fixated on their obvious under-bite and they have folds of skin that hang loosely on their head. They have small ears, short tails and wide-set dark round eyes.

English Bulldog information will also tell you that there seems to be no rhyme or reasoning as to why most prefer and will pay extra for a pale yellow or red coat while black dogs are rarely ever wanted and typically the last to be adopted. Brindle and fawn are also preferred choices or a coat that provides a combination of more than one color is desirable as well.

This is a breed that has gone through a lot of pain in its long history and although they have natural guard dog instincts, they really just want to be respected and loved like any other.
