Is English Bulldog Temperament as Dangerous as You've Heard?

Despite the breed's abusive history of being created to fight, English Bulldog temperament is actually quite docile and eager to please. It is said that of all of the breeds with undesirable reputations, this is the one that is most misunderstood. Underneath that rough-looking exterior is a sweet, loving breed that really just wants constant human companionship.

Common Traits in English Bulldog Temperament

• Stubborn – It is unfair to call this breed lazy as many do when discussing English Bulldog temperament. The truth of the matter is, these are not dogs who are going to jump just because you say so. He will evaluate your commands and then determine if he deems them important or not. Proper training and becoming the leader of this breed is critical but even if your dog understands that you are in charge, don't expect him to always listen.

• Observant – A strong guard dog instinct are often the words to describe English Bulldog temperament. Just because they aren't quick to move sometimes and may appear to be indolent, this is a breed that notices absolutely every movement, sound and smell around. They don't like change, it is quite common for a Bulldog to bark and let you know something is out of place if you moved around the furniture.

• Unpredictable – If you are looking for a guard dog, you may assume that the English Bulldog temperament makes them the smart choice. However, while some will naturally defend their pack and territory without any training, others are so carefree that they're happy to invite a stranger into your home. You never know which English Bulldog temperament you're going to be blessed with when you bring home one of these puppies.

• Self-assured – While other feared dogs often don't realize just how strong that they are, the English Bulldog does. He's very aware of the force he puts behind an attack and a bite. These dogs will evaluate a situation and react with the appropriate force that they feel is necessary to get their point across rather than just going in for the kill.

• Sensitive – When examining the sweeter side of English Bulldog temperament, you will discover that these are an extremely sensitive and responsive breed. They are truly the perfect companion because when you're sad, they'll act like a clown to cheer you up and if you're sick they'll remain close to your side.

• Protective – While many people assume that English Bulldog temperament is not recommended for homes with small children, this statement couldn't be more false. These dogs tend to be more protective over young children than they are over adults and are quick to intervene if they feel the child is in any danger.

• Playful – English Bulldog temperament is incredibly playful, even after puppyhood. In fact, many seem to never grow out of their fun puppy behavior, they just move a little slower with age.

• Snore – If you value peace and quiet when you sleep, the English Bulldog may not be the breed for you because most snore quite loudly. They can't help it and you can't fix it, the trait is the result of the shape of their skull.

• Messy – No one will ever use the words neat and tidy when describing English Bulldog temperament. They are messy eaters, they slobber when they drink and most have minor drooling problems. Of course, all of these qualities just add to their peculiar charm.

• Separation Anxiety – In order for this breed to be happy, they require constant human companionship and a lot of attention. Separation anxiety and destructive behavior are two very undesirable traits found in English Bulldog temperament. If you can provide your dog with endless amounts of attention, this is probably the perfect breed for you.

You really cannot judge a book by its cover when examining English Bulldog temperament. Underneath that stout, grumpy and often pathetically depressed-looking exterior, there is a fun, lively and affectionate dog who is always up for anything as long as he's with someone he loves.
