How to Make the Most of Puppy Training Pads

Gone is the day of laying old newspapers in a designated area and having to clean up a dripping wet mess thanks to the invention of puppy training pads. This method isn't for everyone but many have outstanding success using these helpful tools.

Whether you have a tiny breed and live in a high-rise apartment so running outside isn't always convenient or you just want to allow your dog a place to do his business in case you don't get home from work on time, puppy training pads can make your life much easier.

What are Puppy Training Pads?

Wondering why you shouldn't just use newspaper or paper towels? Well, neither one of these items is designed to absorb all that a puppy can eliminate. Not to mention, they move around and create even more of a mess.

Puppy training pads are made from very absorbent materials and a thin plastic lining is on the underside to keep fluids from leaking through. They come in various sizes and some even have a sticky tape in places to keep them stationary. However, since they are a bit heavier than newspaper and paper towel, the chance of them blowing around from the breeze coming through the window is pretty slim so you really don't even have to tape them down.

Using Puppy Training Pads the Right Way

You basically want to use puppy training pads with the same approach you would if you were training your dog to go outside. Lay down the pads in the same area every time, preferably on a tile or cement floor because there are bound to be a few mishaps from time to time.

Just as you would take your dog on a leash to his new designated area in the backyard, you'll walk him over to the puppy training pads for him to go to the bathroom. Always use the same command every time you take him there, Go potty seems to be the preferred choice. When your puppy does go potty on the pads, praise him and provide a treat.

When you first begin training with puppy training pads, you will take your dog to this area on a set schedule. Begin with once an hour and gradually allow more time to pass. You can't expect your dog to find and use his puppy training pads on his own until he understands that he is expected to use them every time. Eventually, he will know to always return to this same spot.

Helpful Tips for Using Puppy Training Pads

• Always be consistent! Make sure that the pads are in the same area, put your dog on a schedule and remember to provide plenty of praise every single time.

• There are sprays available that are meant to attract your puppy to the area. Alternatively, some suggest just gently touching the middle of the new training pad with the soiled one so that the scent is transferred works just as well. This allows the puppy to follow his own scent.

• Never scold your puppy for accidents! While puppy training pads can provide an easy solution for those who don't have the convenience of always being there to take their dog out the back door, accidents are still bound to happen. Yelling at your puppy will only scare and confuse him, not make him learn to use the pads any faster.

Puppy training pads can make your life a lot easier when used properly. It is important to take the time to train your puppy to use them or he won't be able to distinguish the difference between them and you new white rug.
